Benny Beaver and Jack Otter both wanted to take Sally Raccoon to the High School Prom. Obviously only one could. They had both asked Sally but neither had an answer yet. Sally got them together and told them she was very flattered by their invitations and wanted to be fair in her decision as to which invitation she would accept. She said, “Fellows, I think a log-rolling contest down at the pond can be a way of deciding who takes me.” Benny and Jack agreed.
They met at the pond and both contestants were balanced on the log. They started it rolling faster and faster. Both Benny and Jack were quite good at it. Spectators were beginning to wonder if they would just wear themselves out and call it a draw. All of a sudden, there was a big splash and Benny hit the water. The contest was over, everyone cheered.
Jack took many bows and wet Benny swam to the shore feeling very sad. When he got there Sally greeted him and congratulated him on being the one to take her to the Prom. Huh? Benny said, “I don’t understand.” Sally explained that she was a slow ballroom-type dancer and that anyone who was too fast-footed would probably jitterbug and trample her poor toes to pieces before she could get her feet out of the way.
Therefore the loser showed himself to be the slower footed and just right for Sally’s dancing style. Benny thought to himself, “How about that; making a splash with the ladies is as easy as falling off a log.” Meanwhile, Jack was still taking bows and was being presented with a Gold Cup for being an Ace Log Roller. Sometimes it seems everyone is a winner.
