Gallahad was a mild-mannered goose, the only goose on the pond. Everyone else was a duck, mud hen, or loon. Occasionally there was trouble that interrupted the tranquility of the pond. When that happened everyone ran for cover, and Gallahad ran the fastest. Some even called him a big sissy. He’d run at the distant bark of a dog, or the sound of thunder, or a bullfrog croaking too loud; and he was fast.
Frequently when it looked like trouble was brewing, a mysterious masked goose wearing a red cape would appear from nowhere and patrol until things looked okay again. Who was this handsome stranger that seemed to fear nothing and was ready to protect? What was his name? Some said it was Super Goose.
One day two odd-looking giant mallards landed in the pond and proceeded to wreck nests, steal food, beat up the little drakes and pick on the defenseless lady ducks. Gallahad disappeared in a flash amidst all the cries for help. In a flash from behind the bush Gallahad had run to hide in, emerged Super Goose. He gave those two mallards what for, yanked out their tail feathers, and sent them off hollering for their mama.
Just as soon as the trouble was over, Super Goose disappeared, and behold Gallahad came out of hiding. Of course he was greeted by shouts of “Where were you, you big sissy?” “You weren’t any help at all.” Poor Gallahad, he just hung his head and swam to the other side of the pond.
Who was this super goose anyway? No one knew. Lois Loon had a good idea, but she wasn’t talking. She just kept liking Gallahad no matter what others said. You might say Lois knew a good guy when she saw one.
