Marvin was a rooster of the Easter egg variety, his plush plumage was very shiny and he strutted a lot. There was another rooster named Scruffy.
Scruffy wasn’t much to look at but he was a working rooster. He kept the hens in line laying their eggs and if a fox came around Scruffy would protect the hens. He was Scruffy, but he was scrappy also. Marvin was one fine looking strutting rooster and the hens were all ga-ga over him. Other than looks, he wasn’t good for anything else. But Marvin still was one ultra proud rooster. Marvin knew that Big Bob’s son Little Bob was raising him to take first prize at the 4H Fair.
Well, that day came and off went Marvin to the 4H Fair. One smarty pants hen walked over to Scruffy and said, “Don’t you wish that were you?” Scruffy replied, “No way.”
“Why not?” asked the smarty hen.
Scruffy said, “Did you ever notice that as it gets close to 4H Fair time I lose weight and pull some of my feathers out?”
Smarty hen said, “Everyone noticed.”
“Well,” explained Scruffy, “that’s because I want to make sure I don’t go. I once went years ago; and praise God I wasn’t a winner. No doubt Marvin will get the Blue Ribbon and Little Bob will proudly bring it home, but Marvin won’t be coming back.
“Why not?” asked the smarty hen.
Scruffy said, “When I was there I observed the first place winner was sold off. The winner’s plumage went to grace some woman’s new hat and the rest of him got to make a guest appearance at a place called Colonel Sander’s Kentucky Fried Chicken.” There was stunned silence and the hens began weeping. Scruffy tried hard not to strut. You see, he knew that “Pride Goes’ Before a Great Fall.”
