Teenagers can do foolish things. There are many stories about that sort of thing and this is but another such story.
Down on Farmer Bo Jackson’s farm and out in the barn yard there was quite a ruckus going on between Big Joe the Rooster and Tall Ed the Rooster. Both of these roosters were too young to know one end from the other, but they both thought they did. At issue was which one of them should be telling the hens what to do and how many eggs to lay. Back and forth the bickering and name-calling went. They finally decided to have a contest to settle matters.
Contest day arrived and at opposite ends of the barnyard each rooster got into his hotrod and revved up the engine; the flag dropped and they raced toward each other head on as one does in game called “Chicken.” The first one to swerve out of the way is a Big Chicken. Hello, am I missing something? Is there an oxymoron in the crowd? If they are trying to prove who is the Big Chicken, then this contest does what?
It turned out to be a moot question since they both swerved out of the way at the same time. That left us with two Big Chickens, but it was still undecided who would be the boss. So then they agreed to have a crowing contest to begin at the next sunrise.
Well, here we are folks. It’s sunrise, and there they go. Big Joe is the loudest, but Tall Ed crows the longest. It’s close, it may be a photo finish, but wait! Folks, here comes the judge. Why, it’s Farmer Jackson and he awards first prize to Tall Ed. Yes, folks. Tall Ed won an invitation to Sunday Dinner up at the house.
That left Big Joe as boss of the barnyard, but the hens ignored him because you get no respect if you are a “Big Chicken.”
